OTC Medications for Acid Reflux & Heartburn

Acid reflux and heartburn can often be effectively treated with medication. There are several types of medication your doctor may recommend. These include:

Antacids

Antacids, like TUMS®, Maalox® or Rolaids®, neutralize the acid that’s currently in your stomach.

H2-blockers

H2-blockers are taken orally, and are absorbed into your bloodstream. They help reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces by blocking the signal to your brain that tells the body to make acid. They’re available over-the-counter – brands include Pepcid® and Zantac® – or by prescription.

PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors)

PPIs are taken orally, and work systemically (in the bloodstream) to reduce the amount of acid your body releases into your stomach by inhibiting the chemical process in your body that actually produces stomach acid. They’re available by prescription only, and brands include Nexium® and Prevacid®.

Alginates

Gaviscon® is an example of an alginate. Alginates work non-systemically (not in the bloodstream) to form a protective barrier in your stomach that helps block acid from splashing up into your esophagus (throat). Because they actually prevent stomach acid from reaching the esophagus instead of merely decreasing the acid your body naturally produces, alginates are particularly effective for relief from acid reflux and heartburn. Alginates provide faster relief than H2-blockers, and last longer than traditional antacids.
