Acid Reflux, Heartburn and GERD
Heartburn caused by acid reflux can be a very painful experience. It's caused by acidic stomach acid splashing up into your sensitive esophagus (acid reflux), which often leads to a painful, burning sensation felt in the chest and throat (heartburn).
Recurring acid reflux episodes can cause GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease).
How Gaviscon® Works
Gaviscon works differently than other types of heartburn remedies, by forming a protective barrier that actually helps block stomach acid from splashing up into your esophagus. Gaviscon's protective barrier gets rid of the scorching pain of heartburn fast, and continues to protect you from acid reflux for hours.
Causes of Acid Reflux
Acid reflux occurs when the muscle surrounding the juncture of your esophagus and stomach, known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), doesn’t close properly or opens too often, allowing stomach acid to flow backwards or “reflux” into the esophagus.
There are various reasons why the LES may not function properly; hormonal changes, certain prescription medications, being overweight and pressure on the stomach from eating large meals are just a few of the reasons. For pregnant women, hormonal changes and pressure from the fetus are the most common reasons.
